About Our Practice
-
All of our therapists are trained in the effects of trauma on child development and how attachment wounds interfere with well-being and relationships in adulthood.
We provide individual psychotherapy, Attachment Focused EMDR, Brainspotting, Psychedelic Integration, yoga therapy, health coaching and parent coaching to adults. We also offer Trauma Sensitive Massage therapy, please visit this page to learn more about these services.
Our therapy work focuses on what is causing the problem, rather than only symptom reduction.
You don’t have to live with anxiety, depression, people pleasing, low self-worth, sleep problems, suicidal thoughts, relationship issues, disordered eating/body image concerns, boundary violations and/or addictive behaviors for your whole life. Healing is possible!
The “Integrative” part of our name refers to two things. First of all, it references our integrative approach to psychotherapy, which is different from the traditional “top down” psychotherapy approaches most people think of when searching for a counselor. In an integrative approach, thoughts, feelings and behavior are part of our work, but not the whole story.
-
We use specialized bottom-up therapies based in Attachment Theories, Polyvagal Theory and relational neuroscience in our work. These include:
Attachment Focused EMDR
Attachment Informed EMDR
Safe + Sound Protocol (SSP)
Somatic Experiencing
Mindful Self-Compassion
Embodied Recovery for Eating Disorders
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
Brainspotting
Psychedelic Integration
Expressive Arts

We use mindfulness and breath to help with grounding and co-regulation

Why do we use bottom-up therapy approaches? This guide explains. For more on how to find healing after trauma, go here.
Additionally, we use trauma-sensitive “top down” therapy methods including:
Motivational Interviewing,
Parts Work/IFS and
Psychodynamic therapy as well.

The second reason we are called Integrative Psychotherapists is because our perspective on healing includes the belief that the parts of ourselves that we are detached from hold so much wisdom and by integrating these “shadow” aspects of ourselves held in our unconscious minds, we can reconnect with our authentic nature or highest self, leading us to feel whole and rooted in our lives.
We operate from an anti-oppressive, social justice-focused lens and understand symptoms and behaviors through that perspective.
You are accepted, just as you are, when you work with us at BA Healing.
We understand that all humans need to feel a sense of worthiness and belonging and many things have been happening in our world to interfere with that connected feeling, including racism, oppression, colonization, sexism and anti-LGBTQ+ policies.
We help you reconnect to the feeling of self love and safety, which may have been lost through negative experiences from your early years, or other painful and traumatic losses that have happened over your lifetime.
We are LGBTQ+ and Polyamory affirming and welcoming and we on a lifelong journey to embody anti-racism in our personal and professional lives. We welcome and affirm all cultures, ethnicities, body sizes, religious beliefs and identities. This is an intentionally non-violent, liberation-focused space.
We offer virtual and in person sessions in Maryland.

I started BA Healing back in 2013 as a solo practitioner. I had a vision to help my community heal from the impacts of historical and intergenerational trauma that were contributing to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, poor self worth, suicidal thoughts, autoimmune disorders, chronic pain issues and relationship problems. At the time there weren’t any psychotherapists that I knew of in our area who were focused on trauma.
In 2015 I launched Therapy Chat, a podcast to help therapists learn about ways to help clients with trauma and attachment wounds using alternative methods to the typical talk therapy based on the medical model that are so prevalent in our area. It has grown to be heard in over 160 countries over the past 8 years. It’s been downloaded more than 8 million times, and aside from running my group practice, this is where much of my time is focused.
In 2021 I created Trauma Therapist Network, a website to teach people about trauma and how it shows up in our lives. Earlier that summer I created Trauma Chat, a podcast focused on teaching people that trauma is real, healing is possible, and help is available, if you know where to look. In addition to blog articles about trauma, Trauma Therapist Network holds all episodes of Therapy Chat and Trauma Chat, as well as a searchable directory to find a trauma therapist. It has evolved into a membership community supporting trauma therapists to do our best work while being held in community, to overcome the isolation and burnout which are so prevalent in our field, especially after the pandemic turned our worlds upside down in 2020.
I’m trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy through level 2; Brainspotting (Phases 1 & 2, intensive and ongoing additional trainings); Mindful Self Compassion (5 Day Intensive): LifeForce Yoga Therapy (Level 1); IFS (IFS & LifeForce Yoga weekend, IFS & Complex Trauma 5 Day Intensive with Dr. Frank Anderson; IFS Inner Circle); Applied Polyvagal Yoga (Dr. Arielle Schwartz); and in 2015 I earned an Advanced Level II Certificate in Trauma Therapy from the Ferentz Institute. In 2024 I completed an EMDRIA-Approved EMDR Basic Training through the Institute for Creative Mindfulness. Although I have let go of the certification as of 2022, I completed training in Brené Brown’s The Daring Way™ method in 2014. I’ve been training in anti-racism work and reflecting on the intentions of decolonizing myself and my practice since 2020 through Decolonizing Therapy for Black Folks (Dr. Shawna Murray-Browne) and other liberatory-focused, anti-carceral methods. I’m also a huge believer in the benefits of investing in therapy, coaching, bodywork and other supports to help us thrive.
I also have lived experience with Complex PTSD and I’ve specialized in working with sexual trauma since 2002. I love teaching and training therapists in using integrative approaches in healing trauma and attachment. I’ve been a Maryland Board-Approved & Registered Supervisor since 2014 and I offer Clinical Supervision and Consultation. I’m a Field Instructor for the University of Maryland School of Social Work.
Laura earned her Masters Degree in Social Work from University of Maryland School of Social Work. She has worked in a variety of settings including outpatient community mental health clinics, hospitals, the military, and private practice. She has been working with trauma survivors since 2002 and started BA Healing in 2013.
Laura is currently accepting a limited number of new adult clients for virtual therapy sessions. Laura also has openings for Clinical Consultation.

Attachment-Informed EMDR

I enjoy working with adults of all cultures and backgrounds who are overcoming the effects of abuse within relationships. I am particularly interested in helping those who are survivors of narcissistic abuse. My approach to healing from narcissistic abuse is based in my study of the work of Dr. Ramani Durvasula.
If you’ve been abused in relationships, whether it was emotional, verbal, physical, sexual, or spiritual abuse - even if it happened long ago, it can affect your trust in yourself and other people for your whole life. The trauma of this type of experience won’t go away on its own - we can’t just “get over it,” or “put the past in the past.” The good news is, it is possible to heal these core wounds which change the way we feel about ourselves and others.
It’s possible to feel safe in the world, and to have safe and healthy relationships, even if you’ve found yourself repeating the same patterns throughout your life and you have no idea why.
Using parts work, Attachment Informed EMDR and other trauma and attachment focused therapy methods along with a strong therapeutic relationship, I can help you learn to set boundaries, express yourself, and feel confident to be who you are to live your most empowered life, regardless of what anyone else thinks of you.
We will work together to set goals that work for you, to create the life you want.
I’m LGBTQ+ affirming and welcoming to all cultures and identities. I work with adults only and am available to work with clients in Maryland virtually.
Martina, a native speaker of Arabic, earned a masters degree in Social Work from the Catholic University of America. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings. She completed EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training through the Institute for Creative Mindfulness in March 2023, and EMDRIA-approved Attachment-Focused Trauma Therapy for Adults (AFTT-A) with Ann Potter and Debra Wesselmann in April 2024. Martina is supervised by Maureen Tabor, LCSW-C, an integrative, somatic, trauma and attachment focused therapist.
Martina has immediate openings for new adult clients for virtual therapy sessions. Please note she will be on extended leave come January 2026.

Our nervous system is a foundational part of our health. When it's stuck in a state of high alert due to stress, trauma, or the constant demands of a chronic illness, it's hard to find peace. This is where our primitive reflexes—the automatic movements we're born with—can be at play. If they don't integrate properly, or later in life become un-integrated, they can contribute to an overactive nervous system, leaving us feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and physically tense.
MNRI helps by gently and systematically guiding the nervous system to re-pattern and integrate these reflexes. This isn't about talk therapy; it's a body-based process that can create real, tangible shifts.
Stress and Trauma: Chronic stress and trauma can keep the body in a state of "fight, flight, or freeze." This is a direct survival response linked to our primitive reflexes. An unintegrated Moro reflex, for example, can contribute to a constant state of hypervigilance. Through MNRI, we can help the nervous system move out of this survival mode, leading to a profound sense of calm and safety. I've seen clients who have been on high alert for years begin to find relief.
Sensory Processing: Many of my clients, especially those with trauma or chronic illness, experience sensory overload. Simple things like loud noises or certain textures can be incredibly distressing. This is often because the nervous system isn't processing sensory information efficiently. MNRI helps regulate the neurological pathways responsible for sensory input. By integrating reflexes, like the tactile reflex, we can help the nervous system become less defensive and more comfortable with the world around them.
Chronic Illness: Living with a chronic illness is a form of ongoing stress and often trauma. The physical pain, fatigue, and emotional toll can keep the nervous system in a constant state of dysregulation. MNRI helps to calm this system, which can reduce physical symptoms like muscle tension and pain sensitivity. It's a way of telling the body, "You're safe now," which can be an incredibly powerful message for someone whose body has felt like an enemy. It’s a way to work with the body, not against it.
By using MNRI, I'm able to offer a truly integrative approach that addresses the mind, body, and nervous system as a whole. It’s an effective way to help clients build a foundation of neurological stability, which is essential for lasting healing.
January is currently accepting new adult clients for in-person therapy sessions.

Do you ever feel like this adulting thing is a lot harder than you expected? For many of my clients, this comes up a lot when dealing with parenting. I have been there, and understand how hard it can be! Especially for those of us who grew up believing that we “should” be “good girls.”
The whole “be nice,” “put others first” thing gets tiring when you’re juggling work - inside or outside the home - trying to parent differently from the way your parents did it, trying to make it in your career, hustling to keep up with everything and feeling like you’re failing everywhere you turn. It’s even worse if you hold yourself to super high standards - add in perimenopause and it’s a recipe for feeling exhausted and burned out!
If you’re feeling like you’ll never catch up, wondering why you can’t “get it right,” I’d love to help! I specialize in helping high performing adults struggling with people pleasing and perfectionism. I use a mindfulness based, somatic parts work approach focused on developing self compassion, meeting unmet attachment needs and healing the wounded inner child.
Another specialty of mine is supporting caregivers (parents/adult children) who set their needs aside to support a loved one. The weight of caregiving can be heavy at times, and brings up a lot of mixed feelings including fatigue and exhaustion, tension, frustration, guilt, resentment, worry and more.
Caregivers often deny their own needs because someone else needs more. Sometimes life requires us to do this, but when it goes on for a while we can become depleted. This can turn into a habit of neglecting ourselves and can have negative impacts on our relationships to self and others.
If you have a tough inner critic; struggle to love yourself; think you have to be perfect to earn love and belonging, let’s talk!
I use a holistic, client-centered, strengths-based, warm and compassionate approach. I practice with a Psychodynamic therapy approach focused on increasing Self Compassion and healing the wounded parts of ourselves which haven’t been safe to be expressed. I also use the Trauma Conscious Yoga Method, CBT, Mindfulness, parts work based in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and my perspective is based in a somatic trauma and attachment lens rooted in Polyvagal Theory. I’m available virtually and in person.
I hold Level 1 and 2 Trauma Certificates from the University of Maryland Graduate School of Social Work, through a program led by Lisa Ferentz, LCSW-C in 2010-11. I completed the certification in Trauma Conscious Yoga Method, Level 1 with Nityda Gessel, LCSW in 2025.
